Traveling to Sheltering Branch School

Check-in for camp is from 3 pm to 6 pm on Saturday. Please ensure that you leave enough time in advance to account for potential unexpected delays. Camp Wooten is quite isolated, and is approximately 45 minutes traveling time from Dayton, Washington. The camp phone number is (509) 843-3708. There is NO cell phone reception at the camp.*

Beware internet mapping programs and GPS units! At best, you will get directions that take you to Camp Wooten over some highly scenic but unpaved roads. At worst, you will get a map to somewhere other than Camp Wooten! The shortest routes to Camp Wooten involve fairly steep grades on several of the higher mountain ridges in the area. Signage on these roads is minimal or nonexistant. There is little cell phone coverage in the area: you should NOT expect to rely on cell phone navigation systems that depend on cell tower triangulation.

If you wish to use a mapping program to plan your trip, please use the form below and use the directions provided on these pages for your trip.

A "major" road in southeastern Washington State is generally a well marked, well maintained, two lane highway with a sufficient shoulder to pull over safely if necessary.

Routes "via" Walla Walla, Spokane and Lewiston tend to keep travelers on the major roads as one travels through Eastern Washington. They include short detours through those cities' business districts where one has a good chance of finding coffee; fast food, slow food or groceries; fuel; etc. In Walla Walla, if you don't wish to stop, simply stay on Highway 12. In Spokane, stay on I-90.

Selecting "shortest route to Tucannon Rd" will avoid the detours, but also may avoid those cities altogether and include travel over secondary roads with fewer services available.

Selecting any of the above routes without entering a starting location yields a map starting at the first location named in the route: selecting "via Walla Walla, WA..." will display a map starting in Walla Walla, for example.

The "shortest route" cuts 20-30 miles from the trip but does so by routing travelers over unpaved local roads with few if any directional signs. In some cases, these roads may not have had recent maintenance. We strongly discourage use of these routes even if you have true GPS navigation.
